This week we have a sweet show from a year that has always been under-represented in the ranks of soundboard tapes - 1981 - This one saw the light of day earlier this year, and I'm really glad to share it with you this week. The boys are really on fire on this one - very tight and well played sets - and while most of the fireworks might come in the 2nd set we'll be listening to next week - just listen to the great transitions here in set 1 and pay particular attention to Jerry on 'Let It Grow' ---wow...

Every so often I get the craving for some 'pure' Jerry - and this is one of those weeks - this week I'm bringing you one of the lesser known of the bands Jerry played with - Reconstruction.

Here's the lineup for this show:

Jerry Garcia guitar, vocals
John Kahn bass
Merl Saunders keyboards
Ed Neumeister trombone
Ron Stallings saxophone, vocals
Gaylord Birch drums

It's possible that this isn't everyone's cup of tea - but while its not the most well-known Garcia, I think you'll enjoy it...

This week we will hear the rest of the second set from the 4/26/83 show at the Spectrum in Philadelphia PA. I personally enjoyed listening to this as I find the Truckin'->Morning Dew very well played and while many of us tired of Throwin' Stones ->Not Fade Away it did have its own charm and power.. I hope you enjoy this one!

This week we have the first part of the second set of this very well played show from the spring tour of 1983 - this set starts with a fabulous Help->Slip->Frank.. I really love the slipknot here and recommend that you give it a good listen... If your'e a Brent fan you'll enjoy his work on Man Smart, Woman Smarter

I know this Deadpod is a bit shorter than usual - was running out of space this week - but we'll be back to normal next time - thanks for your patience!

This week's Deadpod results once more from a wonderful suggestion from one of our listeners - this one was for something from the Spring tour of 1983 - a great set of shows - and while this show isn't *exactly* one of the ones requested its one I quite enjoy.. it starts out with a thunderous Shakedown Street and the energy throughout is quite good. I really think you'll enjoy it!

I had a request a couple weeks back to play something for the folks suffering from the horrible floods that hit Nashville TN recently - I know there are still alot of folks there who won't have their lives together for awhile and I thought about this 'partial' soundboard from a wonderful show the boys played there back in 1972 - in fact you can read all about this show and see some newspaper clippings and such about the show here:

http://thevucentennialclass.blogspot.com/2008/10/we-living-still-salute-dead.html

Unfortunately we only have part of the second set, but it is a really great part! :)

I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

This week's Deadpod answers another listener request - and frankly this show is *electric*
If you don't dig this first set I don't know what's up.. this is one of Dick Latvala's favorite sets and its easy to see why he coined the term 'Primal Dead' for it.. the first set is fabulous -we probably don't have everything here -- but what is here exists in really wonderful quality and reflects the band as young and fully charged.. in every sense..I'm sure you'll enjoy this one !

This week - in a nod I suppose to the new Rhino release from the Summer of '89, I decided to feature this fine show from the spring of that year. This was originally a Rex Benefit, at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto CA, a fine venue that the band always seemed to enjoy playing.

This show is no exception, the first set perhaps has a somewhat mellow tempo or vibe, but I think they display fine form on Peggy-O and They Love Each Other.. the Race Is On indicates it must be Derby day ;). I'm not a huge West LA fan, but I am a fan of Brent's 'Just A Little Light'.. I think it was always special when they did a China->Rider to close out a first set..

Hello Friends! this week we'll listen to the second set of this fine show from the beginning of the famous Spring of 1977 tour, in Philadelphia PA. This starts with a very nice Scarlet->Fire, a very new combination at the time, and Jerry does an excellent job jamming out on this one. It's followed by a wonderful Samson & Delilah - love the way Bob phrases this one, then a personal favorite, Must have Been the Roses. An unusual Dancin->Got My Mojo Workin'->Dancin' leads into the Wheel-Terrapin combo which closes this gem. This may not be the very best show of this tour, but it is a great listen and I hope you enjoy it!

I can usually hold off on these until May officially rolls in, but this spring has come early, and with it, my desire to sample one of these delicious shows from Spring of 1977 - this one is also from the start of the tour, but its a beauty.. This first set starts off with that slow tempo many of these sets exhibit, but by the time we reach that Playin' which closes the first set - Zowie! - we're really in the zone..

This week we will hear the rest of Grateful Dead's performance at the Scope in Norfolk, VA, on April 3rd, 1982. After that interesting Scarlet->Fire we heard to close last week's Deadpod, the band goes into a fairly long and jammy Estimated, then a nice Eyes into Brent's "Never Trust A Woman" - while this may not have been your favorite back in the day, I admit I really enjoy listening to Brent now.. after the drums/space, the band goes into a nice NFA->Stella Blue.. an always welcome US Blues encore rounds out an enjoyable show..

Sometimes events happen that push me to pick out a show for the Deadpod that I hadn't been thinking about at all.. such happened this week - first the newest "Road Trips" Release - Nov. 15, 1971 from Austin Texas arrived in my mailbox - I don't often gush over these but this is a good one! At about the same time a series of new releases on the tape collecting scene from legendary collector Charlie Miller - including this beauty from a legendary night at the Fillmore East in New York City, April 27th 1971. While this night is best known for the second set we'll hear next week (when the boys are joined on stage by the Beach Boys) - this first set has some mighty fine playing on it - including what is arguably the best "Hard To Handle" you'll find..

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show that happened on this date 38 years ago.. March 5, 1975 at Winterland in San Franscisco CA. While there are a few tape splices on this overall I think while this is not a pristine recording that's its quite listenable and the band is in fine fine form. Keith is new to the lineup and a great addition at this point (and listen for Wavy Gravy at the start of China Cat).. and of course its great to listen to Pigpen as well..

This week I'm going to bring you the entire second set from this legendary show that took place on December 6th, 1973 in Cleveland Ohio. My first show, I had no idea what I was witnessing - but of course I'm sure it permanently altered my DNA :) This second set features one of the greatest versions of 'Here Come Sunshine' and of course, a legendary Dark Star. The length of this Deadpod is substantially longer than usual, but the music is so substantial that I know its well worth the investment ...

This week's Deadpod features, yes, another show from 1973.. but speaking of *this* show as 'another show from 73' strikes me as a sacrilege simply because not only was this show, my baptism to the Grateful Dead, its one of their all-time classics, in my opinion.
While its true that your brains won't be melted until the Dark Star in the second set, the first set which we will play this week, features plenty of 'Good Old' Grateful Dead to get your blood flowin' during these cold Winter days....

This week marked the 75th birthday of one of the most pivotal characters in the history of the Grateful Dead, Owsley Stanley.
It would certainly not be an exaggeration to claim that the Grateful Dead would not have been without his help and involvement - nor even to say that the world is a much different place because of all he has done..
Jamie Waddell over at Lossless legs released this music, recorded by Bear himself, to mark the occasion and I felt it a noteworthy moment and wanted to share it with you..

This is a beautiful show, nicely recorded (there are spots with quite a lot of reverb) and not every song was recorded.. we have what Bear decided to record... but I do think you'll enjoy it..

This week - the second part of this fabulous recording of Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders during the salad days of 1973 - July 10th at the Keystone in Berkeley CA.
I don't have alot to say about this - let you ears enjoy the genius displayed and lose yourself in this fabulous recording...

the notes for this recording state: "I'm not sure on the lineage but I've thought alot about it. It's obviously a multitrack mixdown(gaps between tunes). Some of the JGB stuff from the Debbie Stash are masters(like 6-6-73!!). My best guess of the 7-10-73 is Multitracks(Bob and Betty Ampex MM110)>2 track mixdown MR>R @ 7 1/2 ips.(WB)>DVD. That's what I think it is esp. being a 7 1/2 ips. reel and the dynamics(nice!!). It was probably "working reels" for the original album that Jerry had maybe that he was picking tunes from"

Perhaps it seems that I've played more than my usual share of Garcia recently - but this newly released gem demands to be heard.. This is (probably) a multi-track recording with the legendary Merle Saunders at the Keystone in Berkeley CA, July 10, 1973.
This is a truly wonderful recording, and if you're a fan of Jerry/Merle then you'll really enjoy this week's and next week's show (when I play the rest of this show)...
Not only does this week's set feature the very first 'The Harder They Come' performance, every song is really a treat, in my opinion....

This week's Deadpod has two unusual occurances - first a show from 1986 - a year I usually find quite depressing and an audience tape to boot! I think when you give this show a listen you'll understand why I decided to ignore my prejudices and post this classic show! This one starts with a smokin' Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story.. there's a *fine* Dire Wolf and I was always a fan of Brother Esau.. the rest of the set is very well played as well, and closes with the second Box of Rain in a week after having not been played since '73.. the crowd goes predictably wild.. :)

I hope you enjoy the performance..

Here's hoping you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I always like bringing you some great acoustic music over the holidays and this year is no different - I managed to pull out this recording from my collection - it features a favorite lineup of mine, the Jerry Garcia Accoustic Band and the famous Lunt-Fontainne theater in New York City..
The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band consisted of:

Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
David Nelson - guitar, vocals
Sandy Rothman - mandolin, dobro, banjo, vocals
John Kahn - bass
Kenny Kosek - fiddle
David Kemper - drums
I think you'll enjoy the sound on this recording and I hope the music brings a smile and helps you enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

This week I'm doing something I don't usually do - and that is rather than play this complete show over two weeks I decided to play you the real heart of this show this week - (not saying I can't be persuaded to play the rest of this... :) partly because its Thanksgiving and I have something in mind for next week :)
Be that as it may - this piece of music, from the second set of 11/17/73 is simply astounding. It represents a true pinacle of the outstanding musicianship that the band achieved during this landmark year. I challange any fan of the band to not be moved by this remarkable piece of music - clearly when they play like this I am firmly convinced that their music is for the ages...

This week's Dead show is more than just a classic 1977 show - its that for sure - and its much more than the first time we get an Eyes of the World going into an Estimated Prophet - although this show is the first time that happens too.. its the kind of magical, rocking, charging life affirming and soul-baring music that makes me fall in love with the Grateful Dead over and over again..

There's plenty to love in this set - the fine Samson->Cold rain starts the set perfectly.. the Playin' in the band builds and builds and then explodes into the Eyes of the World that is played at a real breakneck pace. While I'm not often a fan of Eyes played this way, Jerry's almost maniacal energy on this version can't fail but bring you up out of your feet - its almost 'hummingbird' like in the way he makes that guitar flitter and sing.. followed by a good Estimated, but then Phil drops the hammer and the band goes into a short, but intense, Other One...
after drums.. the band slowly builds into an Aiko, Aiko that is surprisingly slow-paced, but the band then drops into a classic 1977 Stella Blue, then a playin' reprise to end the set..
The encore tells us the band has had as much fun as we have...

I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week, not only blasts out of the gates with a fabulous Bertha->Good Lovin' , but keeps up a most memorable and high energy performance on every tune. Not to be missed, the set closing Let It Grow is truly outstanding, and really shows the unique ability of the band to fire off in all directions yet to find the 'one' and bring us all back into harmony and love.. whew.. a great set and the second set from next week is even better.....

I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.

Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..

This week we get to listen to one of the best second sets that the band produced in 1983.. Each of these songs individually is played with a verve that will bring a smile to your face, but the totality, as is often the case with the Dead, is much more than the beauty of the individual songs.
I could tell you how much I enjoy this particular china->rider, or the wonderful Space into the best St. Stephen of the last three the band played, but I'd rather you simply enjoy this set and the joy that I hope it brings you...

This week's Deadpod features the 2nd set of this entertaining show from 9/24/91, Boston MA. It's one of those second sets that I really enjoy the song choices.. China->Rider is always a keeper, and Man Smart, Woman Smarter always got everyone on their feet! The Ship of Fools->Dark Star is fine as well. A rare Foolish Heart out of space, and one of these later day 'Standing On the Moon's that is very mellow.. The Weight encore caps a set that really does move my soul.

I had a request from one of my long time listeners for some primal Dead.. preferably from '67..
Well I have been wanting to break this out for a while and while its not quite '67 its only a month off.. Jan of '68 .. although there has been some discussion as to the legitimacy of the date and venue of this show.. what there is no question of is that this is a helluva piece of early Dead music.. I really enjoy the Born Cross-Eyed, well and the Spanish Jam and the Dark Star.. and and : ) Seriously this piece will take several listens to fully digest ..

Enjoy this sample of electric. live, Good Old Grateful Dead...

This week we have the entire second set of the Dead's wonderful performance at the Orlando Arena on April 7th, 1991. A splendid example of Garcia and Hornsby, this set opens with a splendid Crazy Fingers into an always enjoyable Playin'>Uncle John's>Playin' sandwich... I especially enjoy the jamming in the Playin' reprise, which goes into a very enjoyable drumz>space segment.

The set closes with a wonderful Hornsby presence on the 'Baby Blue' encore..

As I'm sure you know, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock..
of course the Grateful Dead played there - in fact they were one of the headliners - yet they thought so little of their performance there that they never had anything good to say about it..

Whether the Dead's performance was any worse than any number of shows is an open question, yet the significance of the event for the culture Zeitgeist is beyond question.. We start this week's Deadpod with a discussion with author Pete Fornatale, whose new book Back to the Garden, The Story of Woodstock presents an oral history of this amazing event..

We then listen to two songs from the Dead's performance that night -
High Time and Lovelight, the latter where the band is joined by a very high Ken Babbs...
Hope you enjoy the show..

I really love listening to Jerry during this period.. truly one of the highlights of an extraordinary life..

I receive quite a few requests for shows to play on the Deadpod - and unfortunately can't publish all of them, but I've had a few requests recently for some "primal" Dead. Coinciding with this request was the release of a new version of the classic show we're going to start to listen to this week, without one of the brutal cuts that plagued all earlier versions, from master collector Charlie Miller, so it seemed to me that the fates were telling me to bring this show to you.. Hello Friends!!
Despite my general state of confusion and uncertainty following my move I decided to share some Grateful Dead music in which I found some comfort this last week..
Not surprisingly, its from 1973 - its not a complete show, but nevertheless I so enjoy the way the band listened to each other and interacted that year that I decided to bring it to you this week.. I think you'll really enjoy the China Doll, Truckin'->Nobody's Fault->Eyes segment in particular...

Despite a few flaws (amazingly few I think for a show that happened over 38 years ago :) I think you'll enjoy this fine set. I always treasure a good 'Easy Wind' and the Cryptical->Other One->Cryptical is wild, young Dead at its best..then we get a Cosmic Charlie!

Hello Friends!
This week we have the pleasure of listening to a newly released version of a classic 1970 Dead show - this one is from the Euphoria Ballroom, San Rafael CA, 7/14/70..
We'll listen to the first set this week, then the 'electric' set next week....
note that the last two songs in this set, New Speedway Boogie and Cumberland Blues, supposedly feature David Crosby on 12 string.. also note that the first song, Don't Ease Me In, is from an audience source with degraded sound.. sorry, but felt it was best to leave it in..

Happy New Year everyone!
This week I'll bring you the second set from December 30th 1990 at Oakland CA.
A great set list, and if you like shows with Bruce Hornsby sitting in I think you'll find this to be a good one. A really nice example of one of the more high energy shows of a generally well played year.

Please Note: I've uploaded a corrected version of this set - I mistakenly omitted the Playin' In the Band - it should now be corrected - my appologies!

I do hope everyone had a very Merry Christmas! The band often played very good runs up to the famous New Year's Eve shows - often these shows would be better than the NYE show itself. This week I decided to bring you one of these 'NYE' run shows, this one from 1990. Bruce Hornsby is with the band and does a wonderful Valley Road to end this first set. I'll bring you the second set next week - I hope you enjoy it..

I can't believe how fast the year is flying by! Almost over, and this week I'm bringing you a show requested by one of my listeners - this one sounds great this holiday season - its Jerry Garcia, John Kahn, Bill Kruetzman and Merl Saunders at Pacific High Studios on February 2, 1972.
This is probably an FM source and so its a little compressed - but the music makes up for it.. check out the fine instrumental version of 'Imagine'..
Hope you enjoy it, and that you can find the time for all the things that you love this Holiday season..

This week's Deadpod was suggested to me by a posting on a list server I belong to that claimed this show had "the best" Peggy O ever... now I'm not a believer in that sort of thing generally - too many wonderful versions of these songs to identify, in most cases, "the best" version of any of them.. but it did get me to pull this one out and give it a listen..I was pleased and hope you will be too .. 2nd set next week..

This week we're treated to the second set of October 2nd, 1977 from Portland OR.
I think you'll find this to be a a real treat - a wonderful Samson kicks it off, followed by a nearly perfect Scarlet->Fire. I think you'll love what Garcia does here - especially in the transition!
The Playin' that follows becomes gloriously out there - I think you'll find Phil is really taking the lead here and in the great jams that follow - the Truckin' and Other One are really fabulous examples of this era of the Dead at its best..

speaking of up and around, there won't be a Deadpod next week - I have to get some surgery done on my leg next week and know I won't be back in time for next Friday's show.. sorry about that.. hopefully I'll feel up to it for the week of the 24th...

I don't always get to play requests - but sometimes I can and this week I'm sharing a show that was recently requested - October 2nd, 1977. This is a fine performance - and a Betty board to boot. I think the fun they're having back on stage is clearly reflected in their playing. This is a fine recording of a fun show I think you'll enjoy.

I need to take a moment to THANK everyone who contributed to the Deadpod last week!! Your support will be a huge help to keep us strong and to support our community radio station KOPN. I'm going to do my best to get those copies of 'Rockin' the Cradle' out to you as soon as I can. I have to wait to get them from Rhino, and I go in for surgery in a little over a week - so it might be a little while before they go out - so please be patient. I'll get them out to everyone! thanks again!!!

While I only have the second set of this show, I think you'll agree that it's well worth your time. This show features a wonderful pre-Drums seven song segment that starts with a rousing China-Rider, then goes into a rare Stranger->Comes a Time sequeway. Always a favorite, the Comes A Time is blusey and very well played. The band then drives into Estimated into a wonderful He's Gone and a very unexpected Uncle John's Band before a short Drums and Space. The rest of the show is equally well-played - then they pull out a rare double encore to confirm they had as much fun as we do listening.

I've had some requests for some solo Garcia, or Garcia band, and I thought this show, which I recently came across, would be an interesting contrast with the 1974 show that we heard the last couple weeks. This too, is from 1974, but this is Garcia with Merle Saunders, at the Keystone in Berkeley CA.
It's a whole different sound than the 'Wall of Sound' and certainly shows Garcia's unique ability to stretch out and explore and improvise in a whole other musical realm..

Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!!

I decided against the idea of doing a Jerry 'tribute' - heck every Deadpod is a tribute to the virtuosity and spirit of Garcia - he should still be with us - he'd only be 66 today...........

this week I'm playing set 2 of 9/2/79 - Enjoy the fabulous Weather Report Suite and Garcia's intense jam out of that..
I don't need to tell you to listen to the Stella Blue.. :)

This week I'm bringing you a show that really showcases, I think, what Brent Mydland brought to the band - in honor of the 18th anniversary of his last show with the Grateful Dead which occurred this week. This show, 9/2/79, is one of those Fall '79 shows where Brent really was out front and his playing was so spirited that I'm sure he inspired everyone else.. This week the first set, next week the conclusion.. I hope you enjoy it!!

This week we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's performance on 10/20/78 at Winterland in San Francisco.
I don't think there's really any throw-away tunes in this set - from the opening Half-Step->Franklins, to the exploratory(!) Dancin' In the Streets this is really classic, Good 'ol Grateful Dead.
The double encore, Johnny B Goode and Shakedown Street, just puts the band's own exclamation mark on this performance.. Enjoy.

Grateful Dead Winterland Arena San Francisco, CA 10/20/78 - Friday

Happy 4th of July!!
Since this week's Deadpod falls on the 4th I decided to share a show that ranks up with some of the most memorable I ever attended - July 4th, 1990 at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. Man was it ever *hot* - broiling - they had no ice at the venue.. I remember when certain substances kicked in and the sun was broiling us and we were giggling about that old frying pan commercial - "this is your brain on drugs".......
It was all worth it however when we were treated to this performance.. I'm bringing you the second set - which contains a fabulous Scarlet->Fire and a heart wrenching Stella Blue.. along with a rousing US Blues encore.. I hope you enjoy it!

This week we'll get to hear the rest of the second set from April 4th, 1971 at the Manhattan Center in New York, New York. Personally, I can't get enough of this early Dead - its a real treat to hear Pigpen on Hard To Handle, as well as his organ throughout. The ending combo of Goin' Down The Road>Saint Stephen>Not Fade Away>Uncle John's Band is quite a tasty treat as well...

This week we have one of those great shows from 1971 - for a long time the only soundboard in circulation of this show only contained three songs - but luckily for us this has now surfaced and we have the pleasure of listening to this entire show..
I'll play the second set next week, but there's plenty to chew on here - notice of course the very last 'Easy Wind', and a fabulous 'Me & Bobby McGee'...

This week we get to hear the rest of that fine 1st set - and the entire 2nd set - from the classic performance of 5/4/77 at the Palladium in NYC., NY.
The first set ends with a fine and very well played Dancin' In the Streets, but the real meat of this show is the 2nd set, in my opinion. Here we have a monsterous 45 minute Terrapin->Playin'->Comes a Time->Playin that just will blow your socks off.
When the band finishes the Playin' reprise, the house lights come up and the show is over - there's nothing else they can add.. and I don't think anyone was complaining..
I think you'll agree....

Grateful Dead The Palladium New York, NY 5/4/77 - Wednesday

Somehow the month of May slipped by without my having posted something from that unbelievable month in GD history. I'm going to make up for that this week and next with this fat show from the GD archives. This show is somewhat overlooked all in all, with all the attention paid to some of the more famous shows during this month - but its well worth a listen..

Grateful Dead The Palladium New York, NY 5/4/77 - Wednesday

Please note - I had meant to include the entire first set this week but I made a mistake and didn't.. sorry! I'll include the missing songs in next week's Deadpod.

I do hope you enjoy this week's selection - I'll bring you the second set next week.

This week the conclusion of Bruce Hornsby's first show as a member of the band, 9/15/90 at Madison Square Garden. I think you'll especially enjoy the first half of this set which I find exceptionally well-played and tight throughout. You'll also want to listen to the only post-Brent 'Gimme Some Lovin' with Hornsby - very tasty stuff. The crowd really feeds the band on this one and its obvious throughout.

We'll play the first set this week, and I think you'll agree its loaded with energy. Jerry really enjoyed playing with Bruce right from the start as is evident in this recording..

This week we have the pleasure of listening to the second set of 8/29/80 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia PA. This is a tight and rockin' second set, the boys start with an excellent greatest story into Althea. Then a wonderful version of Let It Grow goes into He's Gone.. I'm sure you'll notice Phil and Brent's contributions on this one.. after space and drums, the band goes into a marvelous Wharf Rat, then back into the rockin' grove with Goin' Down the Road, Around & Around and Johnny B. Goode. While this may not be the most cosmic Dead show around, it certain is a fun, rockin' time..
I hope you enjoy it!!

This week we have a great new soundboard of a show from a year that's often under appreciated - 1980. This comes to us from August 29th, 1980, when the boys played the Spectrum in Philladelphia. The first set, which we'll hear this week, starts off with a rockin' Alabama Getaway->Promised Land opener. The band proceeds to play a really high energy twelve song first set, nicely played and sounding like they were really listening to one another. Brent fits in very nicely here, as he's really found his spot by now. I really enjoy the Big River, and Row Jimmy, and check out the crazy set closing Deal!!!

This week marks the start of KOPN's spring pledge drive, so I am asking for your help in allowing our community radio station, and this podcast, to remain on the air. Any contribution, no matter what, will help to keep us going. I'm working on securing some CDs to use as premiums to thank you for your support, and will announce them when and if they're finalized. But in the meantime, I hope you'll consider clicking on the contribute now button and helping us out with your contribution. If you prefer to phone in your support, you can reach the station at (573) 874-1139. Thanks!!

This week we'll hear the second set of this beautiful audience recording of the Dead at the Frost, 10/10/86. This set starts off with a beautiful Playin, then Jerry really tears up Crazy Fingers. I'm also quite partial to the NFA->Black Peter. The fact that they do a double encore is an indication, I think, that they were happy with their performance as well....

This week we get to savor a truly outstanding audience recording of one of the best shows of the early 1980s - October 10th, 1982 at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto CA.
The band comes charging out right from the gate, with of all things, a mad "Minglewood Blues" that will blow you away. Brent really shines on the 'Far From Me' a little later in the first set, and the China-Rider is exquisite. All in all I'm sure you'll enjoy this first set and we'll play the second set of this show next week...

I've had a request for this show for almost a year and for one reason or another never got around to playing it.. but some recent requests for Pigpen and a stroke of good fortune caused me not to overlook it any longer.. This piece of primal Dead has some wonderful versions of some classic early songs; I particularly like the Pigpen numbers and 'Sittin On Top of the World'.. 'Doin' That Rag' is always a favorite of mine as well.

This week we listen to the second set from September 21st, 1973 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. This set starts with the last version of a song that I happen to really like, "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away", but when you hear it you can understand why it got dropped.. the rest of the set is much better however, and the addition of Joe Ellis and Martin Fierro on trumpet and sax respectively is amazing. I think you'll agree that the horns add a unique and lovely element to the arrangement on these songs.

Check out the crazy version of Satisfaction as well.. Whew! :)

This week we get a nice recording of a wonderful early 80's show - this one comes to us from Alpine Valley, August the 8th, 1982. This week we'll hear the first set (and the opener of the 2nd), next week we'll finish up the show.. I really enjoyed the Alabama Getaway openers of this period and this is no exception. I also think you'll like the Little Red Rooster, Looks Like Rain and Peggy-O in this first set for sure. Samson and Delilah close out the set in an unusual position for this song, but one that works well. There are a few flubs and recording problems - the Loser is cut at the beginning unfortunately - but nevertheless an enjoyable listen, I think.

This week is a very special Deadpod, as it marks the start of our Winter pledge drive for our community radio station, KOPN 89.5 FM as well as for the Deadpod. Musically, we'll continue where we left off last week - we'll be listening to most of the second set from RFK Stadium, June 10th, 1973. This is truly classic Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World into Stella Blue, a Big River, Here Comes Sunshine and a great Dark Star are some of the highlights of this fantastic set..
In the second part of the Deadpod I talk to Gary McKinney, musician, and author of a new novel, Slipknot, a murder mystery whose main character, Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, is a Deadhead. The novel explores his philosophy -influcenced by the band of course, and a classic confrontation of self interest verses the environment..

This comes to us from 1975, and I really enjoy the sound on this even though it *is* an audience front of board recording.. I hope you enjoy it too....
