Happy New Year my friends!!
While I realize the traditional choice for this week would be one of the great New Years Shows that the band performed, I really didn't want to orphan the electric set from the Jerry Band's performance on December 4th, 1987 that we had the pleasure of hearing the acoustic set from on last week's Deadpod.
This is truly a fine performance from Jerry and I personally just love this choice of songs.. unfortunately the 'Cats Under the Stars' opener is missing, but the rest is wonderful, a perfect way to forget about your cares for an hour and let yourself be carried away into the Zone...

Merry Christmas!

As is my tradition this week's Deadpod features some wonderful acoustic music.. this comes to us from the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band from the Wiltern theater, in Los Angeles on December 4th, 1987.
I love listening to this music during this time of the year and hope you enjoy it as much as I do...

This week's second set from December 6th, 1981 - I think any set with 'To Lay Me Down' in it is probably worth the trouble to listen to, and I think this one is quite nice, classic 81 Dead. I love the effects during space also.. (40 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor?..).
Hope you enjoy this one too, thank you so much for your support.

This week's Deadpod comes from a show that took place almost exactly 30 years ago - back on December 6th, 1981 once again at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois. This is a very well played show, and I really think you'll enjoy the Sugaree as well as the Look Likes Rain, among others.. This was a really nice tour for the band, and they are firing together on all cylanders.. I hope you enjoy it!

I'm afraid that when I think of an iconic year for Grateful Dead music in the month of November that 1973 always pops into my mind. This, combined with a long-time request for this show on my request list, led to this week's show. Yes, this is only a day before the show released as Road Trips vol 4 no. 3, and that release does contain a few songs from this set 2, nevertheless, this music is far too wonderful not to be heard and treasured. In this week of Thanksgiving I can think of no better way to be grateful than to celebrate a great show like this one.. I hope you enjoy it as well my friends..

This week I'll make good on my promise to play the second set from the Dead's performance at the Rosemont Horizon in Chicago Illinois on March 11th, 1993. If you're not familiar with the spoken word work of Ken Nordine you're in for a treat here as he recites two of his wonderful word poems, "Fliberty Jib" and "The Island".. the music is quite good also.. I won't say much about 'Wave to the Wind' - I always thought it dreadful, but aside from that its a very good second set, especially from The Other One on, through 'Days Between' with a nice Liberty encore.. I think you'll enjoy it..

Sometimes we all need to be flexible, right? Well this week I hope you'll forgive a change of plans. I'm going to push back the second set of 3/11/93 for a week to bring you a show that was played 26 years ago on November 5th, 1985 at The Centrum in Worcester, MA. The entire first week of November 85 was marked by a number of wonderful shows and this one is no exception. I decided to bring you the *entire* show this week -in honor of the birthday of a friend of the Deadpod and because I hadn't done that in awhile.. This show has a wicked Shakedown Street, as well as a fabulous closing from Black Peter right through Brokedown Palace. I hope you enjoy it.. and happy birthday David...

This week's Deadpod came as the result of two requests I received this week - its not unusual to get requests but it is to get two requests for the same show, both from brothers in Europe! Its a fine show, and even though I'd played a show from this year recently I think its worth hearing this one. Besides, something in the ether is wanting me to play this so here it is :) This comes to us from Wembley Arena in London England, from October 30th, 1990. This week's first set, features a nice start to the show, as well as a fine Valley Road by Hornsby to close the set. I hope you enjoy this one..

This week's Deadpod takes us back to some early "primal" Dead, back to the Winterland Arena in the fall of 1967. While we don't have all of this show, I think you'll enjoy how tight and well played these songs are. The band is clearly listening to each other and hitting on all cylinders. Pay attention to the lyrics used here on "The Other One".
This show's a blast.. afterwards, I've included a cut from the Europe 72 vol 2 CD, the fabulous "Sing Me Back Home" from the last show of the tour.. I'm supposed to be getting some more copies of this from Rhino and plan to offer up another contest for them, I just want to have them in hand before I start to promise anything.. hope you enjoy it!!!

This week as we end the month of September, we get to listen to the 2nd set of a wonderful show from the seminal Madison Square Garden run that occurred back in the fall of 1990. This second set starts out with a tight and wonderful Eyes->Estimated->Foolish Heart. We then go into quite a nice drums->space, which takes us to a nice quiet place ripped open by Phil as the band turns into the Other One.. The Wheel and Sugar Magnolia end the set. Jerry's Knockin' on Heaven's Door ends the show as everyone thoughts turned to Brent..

Well Fall has officially arrived, and this season inevitably brings to my mind the fond memories of one of the greatest later-era Grateful Dead runs - Madison Square Garden in the Fall of 1990. When the band arrived in New York the jury was still out on their future following the passing of Brent Mydland. By the time they left after these shows, they had a new member, and any questions were answered as to their desire and capability to keep producing great music.
The show I'm featuring the next two weeks, from September 18th, 1990 is not the most famous of the run, but it is a very fine and enjoyable show. In this first set I have to point out the magnificant 'To Lay Me Down->Promised Land' closer...
Enjoy and may the fall treat you gently, my friends.

This week we get to hear the second set from the Parmount Theater in Seattle Washington, September 29th, 1977. I think this is quite a nice set with an outstanding He's Gone, Stella Blue and an Uncle John's Band encore to soothe your soul... I hope you enjoy it!

In other news - the Europe 72 Vol. 2 CD contest is OVER! I received a goodly number of entries and I want to thank each of you for all the kind things you had to say! I'd love to respond to each of you but I probably don't have time so I hope you don't take offense - I also wish I had enough CDs for everyone but of course I don't.
I'll email the lucky winners and send those out within a few days. Please remember the CD is available at rhino.com and on dead.net.

This week on the Deadpod I decided to feature a show from the fall of '77.. probably not the time of that year that usually comes to mind but this show, in my opinion, deserves some recognition.. this was performed on September 29th in
Seattle WA. Not only does this show exhibit its wonderful '77 pedigree, but the last three songs really ... rock.. out. In a sense this is a show that looks forward as well as back.. and showcases where the band is going and where it has been.. I find it quite enjoyable.. (be forwarned there is some music that has been lost here.. Mississippi Half Step and Deal both cut in.. ).. but the Franklins!!
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do!

On this holiday weekend I decided to bring you a complete show from one of my very favorite venues - the Starlight Theater in Kansas City, MO.. This show took place 26 years ago on September 3rd, 1985. While Jerry may not have been in the best of voice that summer, I do have to give the boys props for mixing up the setlists on that tour, and this is a great example of that. I hope you enjoy the show - for me the highlights are a wonderful Eyes of the World, and I suppose I've never heard a 'Comes A Time that didn't move me...

High time for some classic '68 Dead.. this week's show contains a wonderful classic Dark Star from 1968.. its from 'Betty Nelson's Organic Raspberry Farm' in Sultan WA., and took place on September 2nd, 1968. This week we have a fine second set from July 29th, 1988 to entertain us as we reflect on how fortunate we were to have Jerry Garcia share his talents with us. This is a great example of a late 80s second set, with an unusual China Cat->Crazy Fingers->I Know You Rider to open the set. This is followed by a Playin' in the Band which really gets out there - Barlow remarked that this one would separate the true believers from those who weren't:)
I also just love the rare but wonderful 'Believe It Or Not' a song that fits the ballad position perfect and was all too rare..
I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do, and while its been 16 years since we lost Jerry what he left us to enjoy is such a treasure that I can only rejoice in his life.. thanks for sharing the ride.

Here's a show that caught my eye this week from the Wall of Sound era - this one is from May 14th, 1974 in Missoula Mountana.. this is probably not the finest show of the era, but nevertheless there is plenty here to like. In this first set, the band really gets cranking on the Scarlet->Roses.. what a delicious segway.. This week the music world lost a true star - Clarence 'Big Man' Clemons.. Aside from his pivotal role in the E. Street Band Clarence was a friend of the Grateful Dead and played with Jerry Garcia as well. In honor of his passing, a listener of the Deadpod requested this show, and it is absolutely perfect to play this week. This was the longest segment Clarence played with the Grateful Dead and occurred on Dec. 6th, 1989 at the Earthquake Benefit that took place at the Oakland Coliseum. (This also happened to be the date of the 20th anniversary of the Altamont). I thought I would bring you the second set because that's where Clarence sat in with the band on the majority of the set .. I could be persuaded to play the first set next week.. I think you'll find this a great set.. I'm personally very fond of the Standing on the Moon, but I think Clarence adds some great licks on the Ship of Fools as well...

This week I decided to bring you a very fine show from the late period of the Grateful Dead. This one comes to us from March 21st, 1994 from the Richfield Coliseum in Richfield Ohio. I think the band usually played well here - and I think this is quite a fine show. I decided to bring you the second set - it is especially well played - right from the Picasso Moon, through the New Speedway and an excellent Victim.. The highlight of this set however is the Stella Blue - Jerry is so expressive on this one - it bring shivers to me when I listen..

Another fine suggestion by a friend of the Deadpod sets the stage for this week's show - July 14th, 1984 from the Greek Theater in Berkeley CA. It seems to fit right in with the last few weeks' and the boys do not disappoint on this one..
From our correspondent's email: "The first set features really high energy versions of Jack Straw and Big Railroad Blues. I'm not normally a big fan of Little Red Rooster, but this is a truly great version"

This week's show is the result of one of those wierd acts of synchronicity that led me to believe that it was meant to be... I had been thinking that it was about time to feature a show from 1985. I was thinking of which show to play and had seriously considered the show from Hershey PA on 6/28/85.. While this is a fun show, it has some problems - the weather was bad, the playing a bit sloppy even for 85 standards.. As I had pretty much concluded I wouldn't play this show I got a great email from a listener to the Deadpod who asked about the show that I am playing this week, from Merriweather Post Pavilion on 7/1/85. He told me about how much fun this show was and how he'd never really heard a great tape of it. While the tape I am playing tonight does suffer from a few anomalies, over all its a pretty good tape, and it captures a great time in GD history. This was the last time the band was able to play at this venue - the pressures and increasing popularity made it impossible. I think you'll enjoy this performance. The Dancin' opener is real fun, and the Dupree's is a highlight. Bobby does a fine job on the Let It Grow and admit it, its fun to hear Day Job once in awhile :)
Next week we'll listen to the monster second set, but I hope you enjoy this one as much as I do..

This Friday the 13th we're in for a real treat as we get to enjoy the second set of the Grateful Dead's performance at the Boston Gardens on May the 7th, 1977. The second set opens with a splendid Terrapin Station into Sampson, and while the entire set is quite good, what really sends me over the top is the fabulous Wheel->Wharf Rat.. one for the ages to be sure..

Ah how I love the month of May! Spring has come late this year, but I still find this month to be the most delightful... and I can never help but feature one of the Grateful Dead's classic performances from this month back in 1977. Clearly one of the greatest periods in their live performance history, while this month is well-known and well-liked I still can't resist pulling out one of these classic shows to feature this week. I can't begin to say what particular performance was the best during this exceptional period, but the show I've chosen this time is no slouch. This week we'll listen to set 1 - which in my mind features one of the all time best Peggy O's you'll hear, as well as a tremendous performance by Garcia on the set closing, Music Never Stopped.. It needs no more superlatives the music will speak for itself, let it lighten your heart like the song of a spring bird...

This week's second set from 1/15/79 is a really classic show for the end of the Keith and Donna era... It starts with an unusual but very successful sequeway - from the I Need A Miracle opener into Shakedown Street.. very powerful and it works seemlessly.. I'm also a fan of the Terrapin Station->Playin' In The Band combo that follows, as I really enjoy a powerful live Terrapin.. While this may be a short second set by some standards the band is clearly on during this show and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

Frankly I equivocated a bit on this week's show.. the show itself was a wonderful request from one of our listener's for a show from a period in the band's history that was frankly uneven, at the end of the Keith and Donna era.. Not only would I call the period itself uneven, but this show as well, with the first set clearly not matching the luminescence of the second set. Be that as it may be, I decided to include the first set this week, partly due to the fact that I am a GD 'completest' as it were, and because its still some damm nice music. While it may be true that the band really revs it up in set 2, I think its worth hearing the entire show, and for support of that argument I point to the Jack Straw and Deal that we can enjoy in this week's first set.. I hope you enjoy, and thanks for listening!

On the heels of an acclaimed tour of east and south, Furthur has just announced dates for their summer tour. It seemed to me to be only fitting to feature the band this week for those of you who may not have been fortunate enough to catch them so far this year, as well as those of you lucky enough to have seen them. This week I'm going to feature music from two of their recent shows, first from a show in Pittsburgh, then from Phil Lesh's birthday show in New York City. I encourage you to visit where you can read about their tour plans, and purchase recordings of all their recent shows.

This week's second set from August 4th, 1976 clocks in at just over two hours of wonderful Grateful Dead music. From the first notes of Help on the Way through the Johnny B. Goode encore the band treats us to a very memorable experience.
I'm personally fond of the amazing Dancin' In the Streets that comes out of Franklin's Tower, as well as the inspired jam in the Other One.. I hope you find as much to linger over here as I do....

This week another request from one of our listeners - this one for a great show from 1976 - this one comes from a venue we've featured before, but I went back and couldn't believe it had been so long since I'd played a show from 1976..
Anyway, its a good year - sometimes the tempo is a bit slower than other years, but the band is listening and growing and while the 2nd set of this show is probably more out-there than this first set, I think this is quite enjoyable- especially the wonderful Scarlet that closes set 1..

This week's Deadpod features a hybrid show of sorts... first off, a great Jerry Band show requested by one of my wonderful listeners - this one comes to us from May 30th, 1981 from the Phoenix Theater in Petaluma CA. Unfortunately I could only acquire part of this wonderful performance but decided I needed to play it, warts and all.. I think it really shines.. I only wish we had the Dear Prudence which I am told was quite magical... As it is I'm pretty smitten with the Mission, and the Melody..

Secondly is a piece of music I've been wondering how I was going to get on the Deadpod for some time now.. this is from 'Go Ahead' - the side project started by Brent Mydland and Bill Kruetzman while Jerry was recovering from his coma in 1986...
this happens to be a truly fabulous Brent performance..

This was quite a week in the Dead community, some fine Furthur shows, Phil's 71st birthday, but overshadowing everything, for me, was the loss of Augustus Owsley Stanley. Owsley was of course instrumental in the formation and development of the Grateful Dead, of the 'big sound' that really defined the concert experience for the Dead, and of course, as a world renowned chemist. This week, thanks to the efforts of Jamie over at Lossless Legs, I'm playing one of Bear's recordings, from the famous Winterland run of October 74. Fare thee well, Bear - give Jerry our love...

Again, this week we have the pleasure of listening to truly classic Grateful Dead, this time the second set from February 18th, 1971 at the Capitol Theater in Port Chester N.Y. While this second set does not contain the transcendent beauty of the jam between Wharf Rat and the Dark Star reprise, it does contain the very first 'Playin' in the Band' as well as a superbly played Saint Stephen->Not Fade Away->Goin' Down The Road Feelin' Bad->Not Fade Away combo that really can't be beat.. I realize that I've been playing alot of early 70s Dead the last month or so and I plan on changing that up next week, but I just couldn't let that 1st set I played last week from 12/31/72 be orphaned - so I'm putting out the second set this week. Its distinguished not only for the fine ensemble playing characteristic of the time but by the presence of David Crosby on the 'Other One' and 'Morning Dew' - I think you'll be able to hear his playing..

I hope you enjoy this and forgive me for perhaps over-mining this period of GD history - there's of course a ton of other interesting periods to explore and we'll move to another next week...

It's not every year that NYE falls on a Friday, so I decided I should take advantage of the occasion to play a NYE show. The Dead were of course famous for their NYE concerts and the radio broadcasts of same that often provided many of us with a joyful experience of the boys we perhaps didn't get to see as often as we would like. I recall several New Years evenings at the radio station listening to the simulcast.. ahhhhh .. I can't claim that I heard this one, but as it marks the transition from one great GD year to another, I decided it would definitely be worth playing.. I really love the energy coming out of the New Year countdown into Around and Around.. the Jack Straw is awesome and I think in general the band is in fine form...

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving! As is the tradition around these parts, I'm bringing you some wonderful acoustic music for the holidays. This year, two of my favorites - the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band and Old and In The Way are on tap for your post-holiday enjoyment. First off, the Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band from Broadway - Jerry Garcia, David Nelson, John Kahn, Sandy Rothman, Kenny Kosek and David Kemper..
I *always* enjoy the sound of these guys - they're fabulous..

I suppose some might think I'm going a little far of field with this week's Deadpod but when I have the chance to play some rare jammin' Jerry I just can't resist. This show is from an early effort where Jerry joined Howard Wales (with whom Jerry was to release the 'Hooteroll' album) for a series of 14 shows from May of 1970 until this show which was Jerry's last with this lineup..
It is a jammed out jazzy performance of some really nice improvisational music. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. I was only going to play the first set, but then thought better of it and decided to bring you the entire show.. I do hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

This week's Deadpod, I think, is not to be missed.. not only does it have one of the greatest Dark Stars you'll ever hear, but the transition from Morning Dew back into Playin' *HAS TO BE HEARD* :) , then after a wonderful Deal and Promised land they even play a Brokedown Palace.. this show is a great journey through the classic Grateful Dead songbook..

I highly recommend this one....

This week's Deadpod was inspired by someone who actually posted about the show that occurred the night after this one on an internet group I belong to - but it brought this entire run to mind and I really wanted to share *this* night with you - as I find the second set in particular, to be quite extraordinary. This entire 3 show run in fact is quite good, and I enjoy this week's first set very much - in particular an outstanding 'Bird Song' and an exquisite China->Rider..

This week I had that itch for some Jerry Band - so I decided to bring you this 'hybrid' Deadpod composed of two partial soundboards of Pure Jerry :)
Both are from the Keystone in Berkeley about a year apart - but both are well worth listening to despite the fact that we're missing some of the music..

This week we have another long Deadpod - I hope you don't mind too much but I couldn't bear to break it up.. this set is the second set from a show the Dead played at Red Rocks back in 1978, just before they left for the famous Egypt shows. I decided to share it with you this week because it contains probably the finest version ever of 'If I Had The World To Give'.... I can't say enough about this one.. don't miss it..
The rest of the set isn't too shabby either - I always enjoy a good 'Eyes of the World' and this one is no exception, but the band only played 'If I Had The World to Give' four times.. and this one is fabulous..
I hope you enjoy it as much as I do..

This week not only do we have a good set to listen to - its a long one :) This of course is the conclusion of the show we started last week, September 25th, 1981 from Stabler Arena in Bethlehem PA. This is not only an interesting setlist (how many second sets started off with 'Might As Well'?), but its very well played - I'm particularly fond of the Scarlet->Fire and everything after space.... of course I'm a fan of Brent most of the time, so I enjoy his styling here as well, your mileage may vary..

This week's Deadpod comes as the result of a request from a Deadpod listener and contributor (thanks Bud!).. and I think its a very interesting show.. from 1981, one of my favorite and oft-overlooked years, this show features some above average Brett and its really quite a *long* show.. The Althea and Music Never Stops in set 1 are quite interesting.. I hope you agree..

Always is a good time for some Good Ol' Grateful Dead- well this is the definition of primal Dead I think... 68 Dead.. Charlie Miller, what more can you want?
This is a great Antham-era Dead show, and its possible that parts of this were used on that album.. I'm very fond of the Schoolgirl.. as good ol' Pigpen is in fine form..
Enjoy.

the Eyes is definitely one of the best, and I always love a great Stella Blue..

This show features some great interplay between Jerry and Brent as well as a very high energy level all around.. I personally love the last three songs of this first set! I hope you enjoy it as well..

This week's Deadpod was a request from a brother who just lost a brother - one of his best memories of his late friend was a roadtrip to see this show, and what a show it was! This was the 'comeback' show where Jerry made his return after the coma that nearly took his life in 1986 - no one knew what was going to happen, and what a great choice for a opener in Touch of Grey! The entire show really sparkles, with a newfound energy and some great new MIDI sounds. To me, the energy of renewal present in this show fits perfectly at this time of year, besides I couldn't turn down a grieving friend.. I hope you enjoy it....

This week I'm playing the 2nd set from the show on Feb. 21st, 1995 from the Delta Center in Salt Lake City, Utah. I find this to be an excellent second set - not only is Jerry's jams out of Truckin' interesting and fun, but the Visions of Johanna is one for the ages. Fifteen years - man that's a long time.. too long.. but on this anniversary time I'm moved to play something from the last year - and I know Garcia was failing and the music wasn't the same and on and on.. but I remember seeing the Dead in '95 , a couple of times, and by the last time I knew it would be the last time .. and anyway, this is one really nice show, there are moments of true beauty here and that's the legacy that Garcia so freely shared with us....

This week we really hit the climax of this show from July 18th, 1972 - the Dark Star ->Comes a Time.. this is fabulous stuff, in my opinion.. and I'm sure you'll enjoy it. I've read that Dylan was backstage at this show and that it was the first time he met Garcia - who knows ;) at any rate the group consciousness is clearly evident here and flows from the Star and Comes a Time into that rare 3rd set...

A nice fat summer show that marks its anniversary this weekend is up for this week's Deadpod..
This comes to us from Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City NJ, and took place on July 18th, 1972.
We'll listen to most of the first set this week - this is a wonderful show, and while Pigpen isn't there (he was sick we're told).. it marks one of the first big stadium shows and I think the Dead did it up right...
I especially enjoy the tempo on the China Cat (a bit slower than you're used to hearing.. ) and of course the wonderful Bird Song, Sugaree and Loser.. besides we get a Stella Blue in set 1!

This week we have a sweet show from a year that has always been under-represented in the ranks of soundboard tapes - 1981 - This one saw the light of day earlier this year, and I'm really glad to share it with you this week. The boys are really on fire on this one - very tight and well played sets - and while most of the fireworks might come in the 2nd set we'll be listening to next week - just listen to the great transitions here in set 1 and pay particular attention to Jerry on 'Let It Grow' ---wow...

Every so often I get the craving for some 'pure' Jerry - and this is one of those weeks - this week I'm bringing you one of the lesser known of the bands Jerry played with - Reconstruction.

Here's the lineup for this show:

Jerry Garcia guitar, vocals
John Kahn bass
Merl Saunders keyboards
Ed Neumeister trombone
Ron Stallings saxophone, vocals
Gaylord Birch drums

It's possible that this isn't everyone's cup of tea - but while its not the most well-known Garcia, I think you'll enjoy it...

I had a request a couple weeks back to play something for the folks suffering from the horrible floods that hit Nashville TN recently - I know there are still alot of folks there who won't have their lives together for awhile and I thought about this 'partial' soundboard from a wonderful show the boys played there back in 1972 - in fact you can read all about this show and see some newspaper clippings and such about the show here:

This week's Deadpod answers another listener request - and frankly this show is *electric*
If you don't dig this first set I don't know what's up.. this is one of Dick Latvala's favorite sets and its easy to see why he coined the term 'Primal Dead' for it.. the first set is fabulous -we probably don't have everything here -- but what is here exists in really wonderful quality and reflects the band as young and fully charged.. in every sense..I'm sure you'll enjoy this one !

This week - in a nod I suppose to the new Rhino release from the Summer of '89, I decided to feature this fine show from the spring of that year. This was originally a Rex Benefit, at the Frost Ampitheater in Palo Alto CA, a fine venue that the band always seemed to enjoy playing.

This show is no exception, the first set perhaps has a somewhat mellow tempo or vibe, but I think they display fine form on Peggy-O and They Love Each Other.. the Race Is On indicates it must be Derby day ;). I'm not a huge West LA fan, but I am a fan of Brent's 'Just A Little Light'.. I think it was always special when they did a China->Rider to close out a first set..

Hello Friends! this week we'll listen to the second set of this fine show from the beginning of the famous Spring of 1977 tour, in Philadelphia PA. This starts with a very nice Scarlet->Fire, a very new combination at the time, and Jerry does an excellent job jamming out on this one. It's followed by a wonderful Samson & Delilah - love the way Bob phrases this one, then a personal favorite, Must have Been the Roses. An unusual Dancin->Got My Mojo Workin'->Dancin' leads into the Wheel-Terrapin combo which closes this gem. This may not be the very best show of this tour, but it is a great listen and I hope you enjoy it!

Sometimes events happen that push me to pick out a show for the Deadpod that I hadn't been thinking about at all.. such happened this week - first the newest "Road Trips" Release - Nov. 15, 1971 from Austin Texas arrived in my mailbox - I don't often gush over these but this is a good one! At about the same time a series of new releases on the tape collecting scene from legendary collector Charlie Miller - including this beauty from a legendary night at the Fillmore East in New York City, April 27th 1971. While this night is best known for the second set we'll hear next week (when the boys are joined on stage by the Beach Boys) - this first set has some mighty fine playing on it - including what is arguably the best "Hard To Handle" you'll find..

This week's Deadpod features a wonderful show that happened on this date 38 years ago.. March 5, 1975 at Winterland in San Franscisco CA. While there are a few tape splices on this overall I think while this is not a pristine recording that's its quite listenable and the band is in fine fine form. Keith is new to the lineup and a great addition at this point (and listen for Wavy Gravy at the start of China Cat).. and of course its great to listen to Pigpen as well..

We'll play the second set next week........

This week's Deadpod features the second set of this classic show from the Spring of 1990, appropriately enough I suppose, from Canada, given the Olympics and all :)
Brent really shines on this set, as is very apparent in the Scarlet->Fire transition and in the soulful Hey Jude... Jerry favors us with the very last version of 'Believe It Or Not'.. all in all a wonderful set of music...

This week I'm going to bring you the entire second set from this legendary show that took place on December 6th, 1973 in Cleveland Ohio. My first show, I had no idea what I was witnessing - but of course I'm sure it permanently altered my DNA :) This second set features one of the greatest versions of 'Here Come Sunshine' and of course, a legendary Dark Star. The length of this Deadpod is substantially longer than usual, but the music is so substantial that I know its well worth the investment ...

This week's Deadpod features, yes, another show from 1973.. but speaking of *this* show as 'another show from 73' strikes me as a sacrilege simply because not only was this show, my baptism to the Grateful Dead, its one of their all-time classics, in my opinion.
While its true that your brains won't be melted until the Dark Star in the second set, the first set which we will play this week, features plenty of 'Good Old' Grateful Dead to get your blood flowin' during these cold Winter days....

This week marked the 75th birthday of one of the most pivotal characters in the history of the Grateful Dead, Owsley Stanley.
It would certainly not be an exaggeration to claim that the Grateful Dead would not have been without his help and involvement - nor even to say that the world is a much different place because of all he has done..
Jamie Waddell over at Lossless legs released this music, recorded by Bear himself, to mark the occasion and I felt it a noteworthy moment and wanted to share it with you..

This is a beautiful show, nicely recorded (there are spots with quite a lot of reverb) and not every song was recorded.. we have what Bear decided to record... but I do think you'll enjoy it..

This week - the second part of this fabulous recording of Jerry Garcia and Merle Saunders during the salad days of 1973 - July 10th at the Keystone in Berkeley CA.
I don't have alot to say about this - let you ears enjoy the genius displayed and lose yourself in this fabulous recording...

the notes for this recording state: "I'm not sure on the lineage but I've thought alot about it. It's obviously a multitrack mixdown(gaps between tunes). Some of the JGB stuff from the Debbie Stash are masters(like 6-6-73!!). My best guess of the 7-10-73 is Multitracks(Bob and Betty Ampex MM110)>2 track mixdown MR>R @ 7 1/2 ips.(WB)>DVD. That's what I think it is esp. being a 7 1/2 ips. reel and the dynamics(nice!!). It was probably "working reels" for the original album that Jerry had maybe that he was picking tunes from"

Perhaps it seems that I've played more than my usual share of Garcia recently - but this newly released gem demands to be heard.. This is (probably) a multi-track recording with the legendary Merle Saunders at the Keystone in Berkeley CA, July 10, 1973.
This is a truly wonderful recording, and if you're a fan of Jerry/Merle then you'll really enjoy this week's and next week's show (when I play the rest of this show)...
Not only does this week's set feature the very first 'The Harder They Come' performance, every song is really a treat, in my opinion....

Today I decided that I would finish playing the excellent 2nd set from 3/24/86 that I started 2 weeks ago, rather than bring you a New Year's Eve show - in my opinion this is a fine second set that I'm sure you will enjoy!! This week's Deadpod has two unusual occurances - first a show from 1986 - a year I usually find quite depressing and an audience tape to boot! I think when you give this show a listen you'll understand why I decided to ignore my prejudices and post this classic show! This one starts with a smokin' Alabama Getaway into Greatest Story.. there's a *fine* Dire Wolf and I was always a fan of Brother Esau.. the rest of the set is very well played as well, and closes with the second Box of Rain in a week after having not been played since '73.. the crowd goes predictably wild.. :)

I hope you enjoy the performance..

This week's Deadpod starts with one of my all-time favorite Shakedown Streets - this one really blows the doors off the place then seques into a fine Samson & Delilah..After a sweet Ship of Fools we're treated to a great ride on the Terrapin Express!! This set seems a real precursor of the fine shows to follow in 1980 and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.. the double encore, Alabama Getaway into Promised Land, shows me the band had a great time this night as well!

Here's hoping you had a wonderful Thanksgiving! I always like bringing you some great acoustic music over the holidays and this year is no different - I managed to pull out this recording from my collection - it features a favorite lineup of mine, the Jerry Garcia Accoustic Band and the famous Lunt-Fontainne theater in New York City..
The Jerry Garcia Acoustic Band consisted of:

Jerry Garcia - guitar, vocals
David Nelson - guitar, vocals
Sandy Rothman - mandolin, dobro, banjo, vocals
John Kahn - bass
Kenny Kosek - fiddle
David Kemper - drums
I think you'll enjoy the sound on this recording and I hope the music brings a smile and helps you enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

This week I'm doing something I don't usually do - and that is rather than play this complete show over two weeks I decided to play you the real heart of this show this week - (not saying I can't be persuaded to play the rest of this... :) partly because its Thanksgiving and I have something in mind for next week :)
Be that as it may - this piece of music, from the second set of 11/17/73 is simply astounding. It represents a true pinacle of the outstanding musicianship that the band achieved during this landmark year. I challange any fan of the band to not be moved by this remarkable piece of music - clearly when they play like this I am firmly convinced that their music is for the ages...

This week's Dead show is more than just a classic 1977 show - its that for sure - and its much more than the first time we get an Eyes of the World going into an Estimated Prophet - although this show is the first time that happens too.. its the kind of magical, rocking, charging life affirming and soul-baring music that makes me fall in love with the Grateful Dead over and over again..

There's plenty to love in this set - the fine Samson->Cold rain starts the set perfectly.. the Playin' in the band builds and builds and then explodes into the Eyes of the World that is played at a real breakneck pace. While I'm not often a fan of Eyes played this way, Jerry's almost maniacal energy on this version can't fail but bring you up out of your feet - its almost 'hummingbird' like in the way he makes that guitar flitter and sing.. followed by a good Estimated, but then Phil drops the hammer and the band goes into a short, but intense, Other One...
after drums.. the band slowly builds into an Aiko, Aiko that is surprisingly slow-paced, but the band then drops into a classic 1977 Stella Blue, then a playin' reprise to end the set..
The encore tells us the band has had as much fun as we have...

I must say that my listeners are simply the best ! I received an simply perfect request this week for the show we're going to start listening to this week as I was casting about in my mind trying to decide what to play... and what a show it is. This show not only shows the band in a period of transition from their slower tempo early '77 style of playing to the more uptempo arrangements of 1978 but its simply one of the best shows of the entire year. The first set which we'll listen to this week, not only blasts out of the gates with a fabulous Bertha->Good Lovin' , but keeps up a most memorable and high energy performance on every tune. Not to be missed, the set closing Let It Grow is truly outstanding, and really shows the unique ability of the band to fire off in all directions yet to find the 'one' and bring us all back into harmony and love.. whew.. a great set and the second set from next week is even better.....

I'm surrounded by beautiful Fall foliage here in Michigan this time of year and it brought to mind this quite remarkable period of Dead shows. I will never forget when I saw the Dead open up sitting around and playing accoustic music. I loved those shows, and unfortunately there aren't a whole lot of soundboards of complete shows from that period that are out but this is one and I hope that you enjoy hearing it as much as I do.

Yes the acoustic sets may not have as much variety as we'd like - but I really doubt that you can avoid having a smile as you listen to the boys chat between tunes or sing along as you listen to Ripple.. its a real pleasure for me and I hope you enjoy it as well..

I had a request from one of my long time listeners for some primal Dead.. preferably from '67..
Well I have been wanting to break this out for a while and while its not quite '67 its only a month off.. Jan of '68 .. although there has been some discussion as to the legitimacy of the date and venue of this show.. what there is no question of is that this is a helluva piece of early Dead music.. I really enjoy the Born Cross-Eyed, well and the Spanish Jam and the Dark Star.. and and : ) Seriously this piece will take several listens to fully digest ..

As I'm sure you know, this weekend marks the 40th anniversary of Woodstock..
of course the Grateful Dead played there - in fact they were one of the headliners - yet they thought so little of their performance there that they never had anything good to say about it..

Whether the Dead's performance was any worse than any number of shows is an open question, yet the significance of the event for the culture Zeitgeist is beyond question.. We start this week's Deadpod with a discussion with author Pete Fornatale, whose new book Back to the Garden, The Story of Woodstock presents an oral history of this amazing event..

We then listen to two songs from the Dead's performance that night -
High Time and Lovelight, the latter where the band is joined by a very high Ken Babbs...
Hope you enjoy the show..

This week's Deadpod features a real treasure - this one again from Charlie Miller - in fact this recording from Mr. Miller's collection was given the tracking SHNID of 100000 from etree.org in honor of his efforts in preserving and disseminating the wonderful recorded legacy of the Grateful Dead.. This show was never before available in such a complete representation and it *is* a beauty.. from the famous 'Academy of Music' shows in NYC back in 1972...

Wow, this week we're lucky enough to listen to a real find, courtesy of Jamie Waddell, who claims to have been turned on to this amongst a box of tapes turned on to him at a yard sale of all places...
this is a really nice JGB show from 1987, and while the first song (both this week and next) come from an audience patch, the rest is very high quality soundboard.
I know you're going to enjoy this one if you a fan of the big guy.. :)

I receive quite a few requests for shows to play on the Deadpod - and unfortunately can't publish all of them, but I've had a few requests recently for some "primal" Dead. Coinciding with this request was the release of a new version of the classic show we're going to start to listen to this week, without one of the brutal cuts that plagued all earlier versions, from master collector Charlie Miller, so it seemed to me that the fates were telling me to bring this show to you.. I'm certain you'll enjoy this - the band just *smokes* on this one, my friends..

This week we're lucky enough to have a show that was previously unreleased and unknown from 1971. While '71 might not be "primal" Dead, it certainly shows us relatively a relatively 'raw' and power-packed lineup. I really enjoy this set and think you will too -

Grateful Dead - August 4, 1971
Terminal Island Correctional Facility - San Pedro, CA

This week's Deadpod was suggested to me by a posting on a list server I belong to that claimed this show had "the best" Peggy O ever... now I'm not a believer in that sort of thing generally - too many wonderful versions of these songs to identify, in most cases, "the best" version of any of them.. but it did get me to pull this one out and give it a listen..I was pleased and hope you will be too .. 2nd set next week..

The wheel keeps turning and it can't slow down....
I thought it appropriate to play something to start this week's Deadpod in memory of a lovely man and wonderful musician, Merl Saunders..

I think you'll enjoy the rest of the show from the Centrum - a great Terrapin and the always nice Dear Mr. Fantasy->Hey Jude are highlights for me..

This week we're treated to the second set of October 2nd, 1977 from Portland OR.
I think you'll find this to be a a real treat - a wonderful Samson kicks it off, followed by a nearly perfect Scarlet->Fire. I think you'll love what Garcia does here - especially in the transition!
The Playin' that follows becomes gloriously out there - I think you'll find Phil is really taking the lead here and in the great jams that follow - the Truckin' and Other One are really fabulous examples of this era of the Dead at its best..

Grateful Dead Paramount Theatre Portland, OR 10/2/77 - Sunday

I'll have those Egypt CD sets out to you as soon as I get them in from Rhino (and I'm back up and around)..
speaking of up and around, there won't be a Deadpod next week - I have to get some surgery done on my leg next week and know I won't be back in time for next Friday's show.. sorry about that.. hopefully I'll feel up to it for the week of the 24th...

I don't always get to play requests - but sometimes I can and this week I'm sharing a show that was recently requested - October 2nd, 1977. This is a fine performance - and a Betty board to boot. I think the fun they're having back on stage is clearly reflected in their playing. This is a fine recording of a fun show I think you'll enjoy.

I need to take a moment to THANK everyone who contributed to the Deadpod last week!! Your support will be a huge help to keep us strong and to support our community radio station KOPN. I'm going to do my best to get those copies of 'Rockin' the Cradle' out to you as soon as I can. I have to wait to get them from Rhino, and I go in for surgery in a little over a week - so it might be a little while before they go out - so please be patient. I'll get them out to everyone! thanks again!!!

This week's Deadpod is big in every way - a wonderful second set that features a fabulous Eyes of the World->Estimated Prophet->Franklin's Tower that lasts nearly an hour and is among the best versions ever of these songs. This comes to us from the great fall of 79 tour, this one is from November 5th, 1979 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia. The entire set is a real treat, starting with a rare second set opening Althea and closing with a truly rocking Sailor-Saint-Sugar Magnolia..

While I only have the second set of this show, I think you'll agree that it's well worth your time. This show features a wonderful pre-Drums seven song segment that starts with a rousing China-Rider, then goes into a rare Stranger->Comes a Time sequeway. Always a favorite, the Comes A Time is blusey and very well played. The band then drives into Estimated into a wonderful He's Gone and a very unexpected Uncle John's Band before a short Drums and Space. The rest of the show is equally well-played - then they pull out a rare double encore to confirm they had as much fun as we do listening.

I've had some requests for some solo Garcia, or Garcia band, and I thought this show, which I recently came across, would be an interesting contrast with the 1974 show that we heard the last couple weeks. This too, is from 1974, but this is Garcia with Merle Saunders, at the Keystone in Berkeley CA.
It's a whole different sound than the 'Wall of Sound' and certainly shows Garcia's unique ability to stretch out and explore and improvise in a whole other musical realm..

This week's Deadpod goes back to the fabulous summer of 1974 - I think its clear from listening to this show that the band is really putting out some fabulous music.

Those of you who follow the Deadpod know that I often prefer to play lesser known performances rather than very well known ones. There's often lots of surprises there to be heard - but there's nothing wrong with bringing out the well-known and loved dates sometimes either. This week I'm playing one of the those - this one a live "free concert" from the "hiatus" of 1975 - Sept. 28th, 1975 from Golden Gate Park. The difficulty here was in choosing between the sources - a very good audience or the existing soundboard. I went with the soundboard but with some reservations. The energy and playing of this performance are over the top - I hope you enjoy it!!

Happy Birthday Jerry!

I decided against the idea of doing a Jerry 'tribute' - heck every Deadpod is a tribute to the virtuosity and spirit of Garcia - he should still be with us - he'd only be 66 today...........

this week I'm playing set 2 of 9/2/79 - Enjoy the fabulous Weather Report Suite and Garcia's intense jam out of that..

This week I'm bringing you a show that really showcases, I think, what Brent Mydland brought to the band - in honor of the 18th anniversary of his last show with the Grateful Dead which occurred this week. This show, 9/2/79, is one of those Fall '79 shows where Brent really was out front and his playing was so spirited that I'm sure he inspired everyone else.. This week we get to listen to the second set of the Dead's performance on 10/20/78 at Winterland in San Francisco.
I don't think there's really any throw-away tunes in this set - from the opening Half-Step->Franklins, to the exploratory(!) Dancin' In the Streets this is really classic, Good 'ol Grateful Dead.
The double encore, Johnny B Goode and Shakedown Street, just puts the band's own exclamation mark on this performance.. Enjoy.

Happy 4th of July!!
Since this week's Deadpod falls on the 4th I decided to share a show that ranks up with some of the most memorable I ever attended - July 4th, 1990 at Sandstone Amphitheater in Bonner Springs, KS. Man was it ever *hot* - broiling - they had no ice at the venue.. I remember when certain substances kicked in and the sun was broiling us and we were giggling about that old frying pan commercial - "this is your brain on drugs".......
It was all worth it however when we were treated to this performance.. I'm bringing you the second set - which contains a fabulous Scarlet->Fire and a heart wrenching Stella Blue.. along with a rousing US Blues encore.. I hope you enjoy it!

This week we get to hear the rest of that fine 1st set - and the entire 2nd set - from the classic performance of 5/4/77 at the Palladium in NYC., NY.
The first set ends with a fine and very well played Dancin' In the Streets, but the real meat of this show is the 2nd set, in my opinion. Here we have a monsterous 45 minute Terrapin->Playin'->Comes a Time->Playin that just will blow your socks off.
When the band finishes the Playin' reprise, the house lights come up and the show is over - there's nothing else they can add.. and I don't think anyone was complaining..
I think you'll agree....

This week we have the pleasure of listening to the second set of 8/29/80 from the Spectrum in Philadelphia PA. This is a tight and rockin' second set, the boys start with an excellent greatest story into Althea. Then a wonderful version of Let It Grow goes into He's Gone.. I'm sure you'll notice Phil and Brent's contributions on this one.. after space and drums, the band goes into a marvelous Wharf Rat, then back into the rockin' grove with Goin' Down the Road, Around & Around and Johnny B. This week we have a great new soundboard of a show from a year that's often under appreciated - 1980. This comes to us from August 29th, 1980, when the boys played the Spectrum in Philladelphia. The first set, which we'll hear this week, starts off with a rockin' Alabama Getaway->Promised Land opener. The band proceeds to play a really high energy twelve song first set, nicely played and sounding like they were really listening to one another. Brent fits in very nicely here, as he's really found his spot by now. I really enjoy the Big River, and Row Jimmy, and check out the crazy set closing Deal!!!

This week marks the start of KOPN's spring pledge drive, so I am asking for your help in allowing our community radio station, and this podcast, to remain on the air. Any contribution, no matter what, will help to keep us going. I'm working on securing some CDs to use as premiums to thank you for your support, and will announce them when and if they're finalized. But in the meantime, I hope you'll consider clicking on the contribute now button and helping us out with your contribution. If you prefer to phone in your support, you can reach the station at (573) 874-1139. Thanks!!

The band comes charging out right from the gate, with of all things, a mad "Minglewood Blues" that will blow you away. Brent really shines on the 'Far From Me' a little later in the first set, and the China-Rider is exquisite. All in all I'm sure you'll enjoy this first set and we'll play the second set of this show next week...

I've had a request for this show for almost a year and for one reason or another never got around to playing it.. but some recent requests for Pigpen and a stroke of good fortune caused me not to overlook it any longer.. This piece of primal Dead has some wonderful versions of some classic early songs; I particularly like the Pigpen numbers and 'Sittin On Top of the World'.. 'Doin' That Rag' is always a favorite of mine as well.

This week we listen to the second set from September 21st, 1973 at the Spectrum in Philadelphia. This set starts with the last version of a song that I happen to really like, "Let Me Sing Your Blues Away", but when you hear it you can understand why it got dropped.. the rest of the set is much better however, and the addition of Joe Ellis and Martin Fierro on trumpet and sax respectively is amazing. I think you'll agree that the horns add a unique and lovely element to the arrangement on these songs.

Grateful Dead The Spectrum Philadelphia, PA 9/21/73 - Friday

This week a truly great show suggested by one of my wonderful listeners in honor of the passing of Martin Fierro - The Spectrum, September 21st, 1973. Although Martin doesn't play sax until the second set I couldn't bare to not play the entire show so we will get to his performance next week. This week, I hope you enjoy the wonderful and well-played first set, including such gems as "Here Comes Sunshine", and "Black Peter". Jerry and Keith in particular shine in this first set.....

Hello Friends!
This week we'll listen to the conclusion of the Dead's show at Alpine Valley on August 8th, 1982. I think you'll really enjoy the wonderful Scarlet Begonias, the crazy drums with guest Zakir Hussein, as well as John Cipollina's guest guitar work on "The Other One", "Wharf Rat" and "Not Fade Away". Check out the crazy version of Satisfaction as well.. Whew! :)

Just a note, my computer that I usually use to put together the show fried its motherboard this week - I had to use a different one to get the Deadpod together - if you notice any problems please let me know.

This week we get a nice recording of a wonderful early 80's show - this one comes to us from Alpine Valley, August the 8th, 1982. This week we'll hear the first set (and the opener of the 2nd), next week we'll finish up the show.. I really enjoyed the Alabama Getaway openers of this period and this is no exception. I also think you'll like the Little Red Rooster, Looks Like Rain and Peggy-O in this first set for sure. Samson and Delilah close out the set in an unusual position for this song, but one that works well. There are a few flubs and recording problems - the Loser is cut at the beginning unfortunately - but nevertheless an enjoyable listen, I think.

This week I have an excellent show from 1989 for your listening pleasure - we'll be hearing the first part of August 6th, 1989 from Cal Expo. The show starts with a 'Let the Good Times Roll' that the band ends perfectly and rolls into 'Feel Like a Stranger' and then Franklin's Tower.. A very interesting and well played start to a wonderful show. I really enjoy this first part of the show - highlighted by Garcia's singing on Ramble on Rose and a great version of Birdsong. I've included the magnificent Scarlet->Fire that opens the 2nd set..

This week I'd had a request for some '68 Dead, and just happened to have just gotten this remastered beauty. This is quite an amazing recording for a 40 year old show, even more amazing is how accomplished the band sounds when I think of how young they were. I think the power of this music, especially in the second set, is really amazing..

This week is a very special Deadpod, as it marks the start of our Winter pledge drive for our community radio station, KOPN 89.5 FM as well as for the Deadpod. Musically, we'll continue where we left off last week - we'll be listening to most of the second set from RFK Stadium, June 10th, 1973. This is truly classic Grateful Dead - Eyes of the World into Stella Blue, a Big River, Here Comes Sunshine and a great Dark Star are some of the highlights of this fantastic set..
In the second part of the Deadpod I talk to Gary McKinney, musician, and author of a new novel, Slipknot, a murder mystery whose main character, Sheriff Gavin Pruitt, is a Deadhead. The novel explores his philosophy -influcenced by the band of course, and a classic confrontation of self interest verses the environment..

This week we have a new release of a classic Dead show, this one from the start of the summer of 1973. This week we'll listen to the first set, which as you can see from the setlist below contains plenty of surprises for a first set! Besides the very unusual opening Morning Dew, it contains the last version of 'Wave that Flag' before this song morphs into US Blues. I think you'll agree that Garcia is in fine voice on this show and I'm confident you'll enjoy yourself as you listen!
